Terror plots, threats against houses of worship, violent crime, and suspicious activity are driving this week’s elevated threat picture for churches.
Possible Surveillance reported through the CWT Suspicious Activity Reporting line. Incident date: 2026-10-18 around 11:39. Reported location: Church Foyer and Sanctuary, Lake Havasu City, Arizona. A safety team member at a Baptist congregation reported that a man and a woman arrived on a motorcycle about 40 minutes after the 11:00 service began and sat in the sanctuary for roughly the last 15 minutes. After the service they remained in the foyer for about 20 minutes, took a selfie in front of a wall-mounted mission statement, and asked a deacon about the church's other campuses and attendance at each, staying until seven or eight people remained in the building. The woman stated she had attended before and knew one of the pastors; team members did not recognize her, and the pastor she named left the church more than a year ago. As they departed, the man mounted a cell phone in a holder on the motorcycle and appeared to be recording the front of the church, though this was not confirmed. Both adults were described as approximately 40 years old, wearing dark shirts and jeans, and appearing to be of Middle Eastern descent. The man was described as about 6'0" and 180 lbs with a beard and mustache, carrying a black fanny pack on his right hip. Vehicle: black Harley-Davidson touring motorcycle with a Nevada plate the reporter believed to be expired. Law enforcement was not contacted. Attempted carjacking reported through the CWT Suspicious Activity Reporting line. Incident date: 2026-10-18 around 19:00. Reported location: A city street near a public housing development, Bronx, New York. A pastor relayed an account, drawn from a police report, involving a couple who serve on the church leadership team. After the Sunday service, as one of them got into the couple's parked vehicle, an unknown individual forced entry into the rear passenger seat and told him to drive. He got out of the vehicle with his keys and found New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers nearby, who then saw the individual behind the steering wheel. The officers reported that they had seen the same individual try to get into the vehicle earlier and then move away when police were present. Several congregants separately reported believing that unidentified individuals were following them in the same area. This was not confirmed. Law enforcement was contacted. One individual was arrested and charged with attempted grand larceny auto. Reporter assessed confidence as high and relayed a second-hand account. Reader-submitted report. A safety team member reported that a pastor noticed an adult male attendee at a ticketed conference at the church who appeared to be looking at camera locations and did not seem engaged with the speakers. When the pastor spoke with him, the male gave only a first name and declined to give a last name. Church security camera footage showed him looking at camera positions before he left. He also spent an extended time in a restroom, which a safety team sweep found clear, and he departed on foot with no vehicle observed. Law enforcement was not contacted.
